About the Author
When I was little, I was always fascinated by the images from faraway lands printed on the pages of the thick encyclopedia at my school library. Some of the most captivating and memorable photos I’ve seen are those of the flat Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott, the great hall of Apadana in the ancient Persian capital of Persepolis, and the majestic Grand Canyon. However, since growing up in small cities offered me limited travel opportunities, I ended up reading more books and secondhand English magazines to satiate my curiosity about the world.
When I moved to a bigger city at the age of 17, I found out about the National Geographic magazine and fell in love with it right away. The urge to explore the world grew even stronger, although it wasn’t until July 2007 when I finally set foot on a foreign country for the very first time. Yet, it took me further three years until I started traveling much more frequently.
Currently I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, a bustling and hustling city which many find hard to love. I mostly travel around Asia while hoping one day I can explore more of the world. One country at a time! My name is Bama, and these are the stories of my travels.
About the Blog
In the beginning this blog was created as a place for me to write about my thoughts on my daily life. However, a few months after the first post, the idea of having a more focused blog came into mind. I love traveling and taking photographs of the places I visit, et voilà! This travel blog was born.
Choosing an appropriate name for the new blog proved to be a challenge. It took me quite a long time to make a decision on the blog’s name. I did try to find a rather poetic or classy title. However, I ended up picking one expression that really represents what I feel every time I travel and explore the beauty of this wonderful world: What an Amazing World!

About 302020
On January 1, 2011, I set a 10-year resolution, which was to visit 30 countries/territories by 2020. Why would I make such 10-year resolution? as some of you might wonder. I felt like I had to set such a ‘goal’ because without it I feared I would eventually give up my passion for traveling. So, this resolution was a reminder for me to never give up the spirit to see the world no matter what. To make it easier to remember, I called it ‘302020‘ (thirty twenty twenty – thirty countries/territories by 2020).
I finally fulfilled this travel resolution on October 4, 2019. Read the story here.

Those are all part of “categories” that I made. You can make your own categories by adding new ones. The drawback of this is that I can’t make any categories other than countries, otherwise those new categories will also show up along with the country list.

..wait a minute. How did you link your category into a page?

You mean the menu on the top? (About Bama, Asia, Europe)..go to appearance tab in your dashboard and click menus. You will find categories and pages to be added to your menu. Just check the ones that you wish to be added to the menu and click ‘add to menu’ button. Under the menu you can change the name of the menu as desired. Don’t forget to click ‘save’. Feel free to ask if you still can’t find it.

How did you create menus on top of your page? About, Links, Contact etc.

Go to your Dashboard and look up the menu on the left. On ‘Pages’, add new pages as you like, for instance ‘Links’. Then on ‘Appearance’ click ‘Menu’ and choose the pages you created to be attached to the menu. I hope that helps.

Hi Bama, thanks for the kind comments on my website. I’ve recently moved back to Hong Kong so that brings me a whole lot closer to South East Asia – top of my wishlist is the Philippines, from what I’ve heard it’s like Thailand 30 years ago before all the mass tourism. It’s fascinating to read about a fellow traveller based in Indonesia, I’ve only done Jakarta, Yogya and Lombok so there’s plenty that I still have to visit!

So, that means that you’ve been to 10 European countries! pretty impressive!
China is one of the most possible near-future travel plans for me, since going there is pretty easy (in terms of visa arrangements) and AirAsia flies to Shanghai (well, actually to Hangzhou) and some other Chinese cities (yes, it means cheap flights!).
Likewise Fiona, if you ever visit Jakarta, please do let me know 🙂

I love anything French! So, I think I’ll look for the movie. Wow, a beer in Shanghai, sounds great! lol.
A friend of mine who has visited Hangzhou told me that the lake is beautiful.
Oh, when I travel to China one day, I really want to go to Jiuzhaigou, Xi’an (to see the terracotta warriors), The Great Wall, Shanghai (I like big cities’ hype!), Tibet, and probably Guilin. But since China is a huge country, I believe there are many other interesting places.

Your English is very good. Did you learn in school? You are lucky to have traveled to so many places at such a young age. My uncle is going to be doing a Fellowship in Indonesia soon. He is a professor in American History.

Thanks! Every one at my age started to learn English in secondary school (3 years before high school). But what really improved my English a lot was watching American movies and TV programs. It helped me understand daily expressions and how to say things at the right moment. Apart from that, I found reading foreign magazines and newspapers very useful in improving my vocabs and arranging sentences in order to tell stories the way native speakers do (for me this is the hardest part which I’m still struggling with).
How cool is that your uncle is going to spend some time in Indonesia. You should tell him to spare his time to explore the country! 🙂 (because Indonesia is a very large country, but sadly most people only know about Bali, which is just a tiny island of Indonesia).

I envy you for being financially capable to travel outside Asia. My purse at this point can only take me to the different provinces and cities within my country.

Btw, these days, flying to other countries has never been cheaper. Thanks to AirAsia, Cebu Pacific Air, etc.
Try to book during promo period. It might be really hard to book though, since the airline’s servers are incredibly busy during such time. But when you are lucky and managed to book a flight, you could end up having already booked a flight with a super cheap fares (for instance, I once booked a flight from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur for only about $1.5!).

While my family has been to many countries in Asia and Europe on our world-trip (which we have nicknamed the Trip of a Lifetime), we would so love to visit Burma.
I love the idea of a travel resolution.
Even though I am only 13, I already have a long list of countries I would like to visit, so maybe I will write one as well.
We really enjoyed Indonesia – a bit of a homecoming since my grandparents were born there, and my grandfather was actually born in Jakarta!

Of all the asian countries we’ve been to Vietnam has actually been the one with the most “You look Vietnam!” They chatter on and on to us and every time we unfortunately have to say we don’t speak Vietnamese. They look disappointed and then say “You look Vietnam though!!” and we go into the entire Indonesian story… Everyone is always so friendly, smiling and laughing.

Lol 🙂 I can totally relate to that. When I was in The Philippines everyone thought I’m a Filipino, hence they talked to me in Tagalog. When I was in Yangon some people thought I’m from Thailand. When I was in Bangkok, some people thought I’m from Malaysia. And when I was in Hong Kong a man believed I’m from Singapore.

Unbelievable… almost all think you are from somewhere else! Yesterday women at the restaurant said ni hao, I wonder how much of that assumption we will get in China, our next stop after Hanoi (we are departing this evening on a night train for Hanoi, then China)… We need to learn some Chinese! Getting caught up with all of the languages is difficult – do you speak Indonesian? We took a class in Yogyakarta.

When you’re traveling to southern part of China I suggest you to learn some Cantonese words, since people there prefer speaking Cantonese to Mandarin. But knowledge in a few Mandarin words might come handy too!

Awesome travel blog! I am getting ready to take a European trip and I was wondering how you put your blog together and what equipment that you used. Are you dragging a laptop and a DSLR with you or have you found some better ways? I would like to take just an iPad and the camera, but not sure that would work. I appreciate your suggestions and good luck on your future travels!

Usually when I travel I only bring my DSLR camera. I always write for my blog only after I return home. But I never travel for more than a month. However I’ve been thinking of traveling for months, or a year, you know, longer-than-usual travel period. When I do that I think I’m going to bring my laptop with me (I don’t think I can hold writing all the stories of my travel for that long).

Thanks for your prompt reply! Over the years I have done the same thing, camera only but I found that I forgot a lot about the places that I had visited and knew I had to do some type of journal or a blog to keep up. Now with the arrival of the iPad I found traveling with a laptop can be a real hassle-it’s just too heavy. I am anxious to see how the iPad will fit into my workflow. Should be interesting….

I forgot to tell you one thing: I also bring a small notebook every time I travel. I always write down things that I feel/see/experience on the notebook. Therefore when I return home and forget some little details about the place that I just visited I can easily look into my notebook. But I think iPad should do very fine! I might consider buying an iPad.

Ah, so that’s where the name comes from! I was wondering but never thought that it’s your son’s name. Because in Indonesia we know Arjuna (my guess is he is the same person as Arjun in India) and Gabriel is more of a Brazilian name than Indian. Nice!

Thanks Gerry! The most important thing is taking the first step. Many people are too afraid to start because they think they can’t survive in foreign land due to language barriers, or simply the idea of traveling is just too foreign too them. Don’t think too much, just use your common sense. Book your flights, and you’ll find yourself gallivanting faraway from home. 🙂 Good luck!

I don’t know where my wife & I will be starting at because we are planning to see everywhere in the states 1st so she can visit my relatives. We have been together for more than 5 years before married. Anyway, I thought I would tell you that as I have been wanting to travel, but had a really crappy life for health problems. I used sports to help me a lot & I won’t miss that much now that I will be on the go doing something else. I love your pictures & the places you have been to, along with all the subscribers you have here on your site too that tell you how much travelling they have done. It surely is not the cheapest thing to do, but it actually depends on your traveling style. Some people managed to save a lot of money by couchsurfing, staying at cheap hostels, and taking the public buses. But some others opt for comfort. I prefer something in between. 🙂

Having a resolution is only a tool to remind us about our dream. But to make it come true only needs one thing: perseverance. 🙂 I’ve been to Munich before but never to Berlin. However I’ve heard some good things about Leipzig as well. So I might put it on my itinerary the next time I visit Germany.

I haven’t had much of an opportunity to travel, once to Italy, once to St. Lucia, once to Mexico and throughout the Continental US… how do you find/make time to pursue your passions? I’m glad you felt that way when you found my blog, because years ago when I started mine and exploring other travel blog I had the exact same feeling. That way I know one day you’ll get your chance to gallivant through the world. I always work full time, even since the first time I started traveling extensively again back in 2007. But with my limited annual leave I had to make proper plans months ahead, i.e. marking the national holidays one year in advance and subscribing to low-cost carriers’ newsletter to find out their cheap deals.

I just love how you’ve embraced (embracing) your passion for travelling, writing and photography and some how I envy you a little. Traveling has been my passion as well and I’ve tried putting up a blog same as yours but fail to keep up with it, perhaps I’m not passionate enough like you are , haha.
Your 10-year plan is inspiring and definitely achievable. For the past 4 years, I would start my years scanning through a calendar for holidays and long weekends to plan for my future ‘Adventures’ but sadly my list only adds up to 9 countries so far. But I have now plans on stopping there!
I too am a fan of National Geography and still do drool over their featured adventures and crave for those exciting and priceless moments — I would have to agree on what you named your blog, what an amazing world we really have!

The reason why I made the 302020 resolution was because I knew along the way there would be obstacles or temptations that would distract me from my passion for traveling. Apa kabar Bama?!! I stumbled across your blog today. I am just preparing to start one of my own, and checking out what others have done, or are doing. Yours caught my eye first because of your ambitious travel goal, then because of the layout, and what finally grabbed me was the Indonesian section (I haven’t looked at the others yet!). Saya tingal di Sorowako, Sulawesi Selatan sampai delipan tahun dan pulang ke Canada Juni, 2012. (My Bahasa Indonesian was never great, and is really rusty now). I wish I had been blogging when I was there…..but it’s never too late to start and I have some great photos. I will definitely follow you and your travel adventures……have you been to Canada yet?

When I first started my blog I did quite the same, and I still do it now because blogging is also a never-ending learning process. I haven’t been to Canada but really want to. Baik juga ‘kasih!! I live in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, just north of Vancouver (a 35 minute ferry trip from Vancouver). Let’s keep in touch, I’ll follow your blog and let you know when mine is up and presentable. You’ll have to get to Canada one day to meet your travel goals, and I hope to return for a visit to Indonesia sometime in the not-too-distant future. Besides, you can be a good reason for me to practise my bahasa Indonesian….can’t believe how quickly one forgets!

I know that when I go to the western hemisphere one day I really shouldn’t miss Canada. My aunt who has been to Vancouver said that it’s a beautiful city. So I imagine Gibsons might have the similar west coast atmosphere, only much calmer. When you come back to Indonesia one day, drop me a message! 🙂

I really like to read about your common trips from two perspectives. I haven’t been to Indonesia yet but it’s high on my bucket list. I absolutely like your goal of visiting 30 countries by 2020 – very ambitious. I am fortunate to have been able to visit 11 asian countries since April 2009 (and other regions of the world before) whereof I started to write about a while ago in my own bilingual Travel Blog.

I’m running out of time though… I have Asia and Africa left to do in a year! I have the opp to go to Cambodia in jan, but things have come with the house my hubs and I own, pushing that trip to the back burner :/. I’m always looking for the chance to travel! Hi Liyana. A resolution for some is one of the most effective ways to force them out of their comfort zone and start doing things which eventually bring them happiness. So why don’t you start yours? 🙂 I suggest you do some research on Jakarta prior to your visit, so you know what to expect. It’s not a city easily loved at the first sight though.

Ahh thought so. I’ve always wanted to visit Persepolis and the remnants of the Persian Empire. Last year I found out that actually the Persians were more civilized than the Greeks. But history was written by the victors, and in this case the Greeks. Anyway, both Greek and Persian ancient temples and monuments are truly treasures of the world and the mankind.

Hi, Bama! This is my first time here. 🙂 Glad to have found your blog. Impressed that you knew about Apadana of Persepolis when you were still in school. I only knew about it when I went there a few years back, haha! :p If you have the chance, do visit it! I found it to be better than the Acropolis in Athens although the latter is obviously more well known.

I love your blog, especially your ten year resolution. It is way too easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, and forget about seeing the world and all it has to offer. Its so encouraging to see other people getting out and really living and experiencing all the world has to offer! Your blog is an inspiration!

Hi Laura. That was exactly the reason why I made the resolution. I tend to travel more slowly now than I did three years ago. I live in Eastern Samar. We have nice beaches too and we belong to an island which is home to 2nd largest cave system in Asia. Hope you’ll drop by one of this days. And, oh yes, El Nido is such a paradise. I also wanted to travel to that part of our country.

I have been staying in Banda for almost two weeks and I can never get enough of it. The active volcano, beautiful snorkeling sites, white sand beaches, intriguing history, original nutmeg plantation, old Dutch and British forts, good food, and most importantly some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met, they all make the Banda Islands such a special place.

Hi Pooja. Nice to know another Nepalese blogger! I guess many people who love traveling in their adulthood were inspired by what they read when they were much younger. In our case, it’s the encyclopedias. In my best friend’s case, it’s National Geographic magazines. Awesome blog, Bama!! I really dig the pictures you take and the way you tell the stories. I’m the very definition of a lazy, spoiled tourist who prefers air-conditioned malls over ancient temples; people will never mistake me for a passionate traveler. But after reading your posts nonstop since yesterday, I’ve been itching to go somewhere exotic and authentic. Let’s see if I can get my husband to overcome his fear of snakes and go with me to India, haha. BTW I find it really amusing that we both call Semarang home, we both used to live in Borneo island, we both went to the same city to study at the same college around the same time (I enrolled and graduated 2 years ahead of you) and both of our first trip abroad was to Europe to attend a wedding!

Thanks Rena!!! What a nice surprise to have you here! Well, you don’t have to go to challenging places for people to call you a “true” traveler. After going to a few places across Asia and a little beyond that, I learned that traveling more and hard doesn’t necessarily make someone a better person. It’s all in one’s head; whether or not he/she wants to open his/her mind will determine how much he/she learns from visiting places so different from home and meeting people from various backgrounds.
Speaking of India, maybe you and your husband can start from the south. People said it’s a lot tamer part of India, although my own experience traveling across southern India for a month proved that we still should prepare for everything … because it’s India!
It’s fascinating to learn that we have so many similarities! I wonder if there’s more! 🙂 Thanks for reading, Rena.

Husband flat-out rejected the plan. His snake phobia is cramping our style, haha. So, sadly no India trip in the foreseeable future. What are your thoughts about Egypt? Good idea or not?

Oh well. 😀 I have been dreaming to go to Egypt for the longest time! The pyramids, Abu Simbel temples, Valley of the Kings, Karnak, ohh so many places! Speaking of whether it is a good idea or not, if you mean the security, I can’t really tell. But then these days even the “safest” places can’t guarantee one’s safety. So I would say proceed with precaution.

I’m actually trying to improve on my English (it’s not my native language) so I wanna know how you acquire such good English and writing skills, especially since English also isn’t your native language, right?
But even so, I live in an English-speaking country and my English is much, much worse than yours (I had to look up the dictionary a lot when I read your articles!).

I venture to ask whether you can put me into touch with a pharmacy in Jakarta which sells IBS Surgical Face Masks ( 3 Ply with Ear Loop) or similar which I understand is available in Jakarta. This is for personal use; as my Amazon order for masks are all cancelled.
All I need is several boxes of masks ( 50 pieces each box) to be couriered to my address.
The reason for a pharmacy is that I can pay them using my credit card.

– Kimiafarma (this is owned by the government): you can go to their Instagram page @kimifarmacare
– Century: you can go to their website at century-pharma dot com
– Guardian: you can go to their Instagram page @guardian_id
I have checked on Google, and apparently some retailers also sell that type of mask online on Indonesian marketplace platforms. However, I’m not sure if they do international delivery. I hope one of those pharmacies can help you.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the Indonesian language and will not be able to order from any website without a translation facility.
All I wanted is four boxes ( each 50 masks) of IBS Surgical Face Mask sent by courier to me.
Unfortunately, I don’t know any Indonesian here who can show me how to place and order / pay.

Thanks for following my blog. That resolution I made was mainly to encourage myself to travel more, and it’s a good thing I managed to achieve that before the pandemic hit! Now, I don’t need anything to push me to see the world because that itch to see places far from home never goes away.
